Second Avanti Class 805 to move to Old Dalby Today

Further to our recent posting (here) about Avanti 805 001 on the move at the Hitachi factory in Co Durham, this train has been moved to the Rail Innovation & Development Centre at Old Dalby and is now undergoing testing.

We are now informed that the second bi-mode Hitachi train 805 003, is scheduled to depart Newton Aycliffe today and make its way down to Old Dalby.

They are the first of 13 'bi-mode' units, based on the Japanese A-Train and can switch seamlessly between electric and diesel power. Each train will be made up of five carriages.

The new trains will replace the Voyager's which have operated on the West Coast mainline for the past 20 years.

They will operate on services from Shrewsbury to London, via Telford Central, Wellington, Sandwell & Dudley and Birmingham, using diesel power between Shrewsbury and Wolverhampton, before switching to electricity for the rest of the journey.

Currently, all direct services from Shrewsbury to London use diesel powered Voyager units.
