Luton DART Hopefully Operational by Easter After Years of Delays

Luton DART (Direct Air-Rail Transit), a major development intended to improve transport between Luton Airport Parkway and London Luton Station, looks set to be operational by Easter after multiple delays and spiralling costs.

The Luton Dart is a cable-drawn, driverless railway running on a 1.4-mile (2.2km) line connecting Luton Airport Parkway station to the airport terminal in just over three minutes,
24 hours a day.

The project, which will transport travellers from Luton Airport Parkway to the terminal of London Luton Airport, was originally due to open in late 2020, however has faced more than two years of delays with an official opening announcement now expected to be made early this year (2023).

The program is funded by Luton Rising - a Luton Borough Council-owned business. Luton Rising has now announced that the opening countdown has begun with the spokesperson indicating that the project could be operational by this Easter. That's following a visit from King Charles III late last year.

The news follows a report from The Times suggesting that the project costs have spiralled beyond the original £225 million price, going around 33 per cent over budget. Following the publication of that article, Luton Rising has confirmed that the Luton Rising board has been advised that it is reasonable to expect that costs may exceed £290m.

Luton Rising say that the budget estimate for Luton DART is subject to ongoing discussions, and further details will be publicised in the future when they are confirmed.
